After months of deliberations, one of the most anticipated showdowns in mixed martial arts history will finally come to fruition when former UFC middleweight champion, Frank Shamrock, battles fellow knockout artist and consummate showman, “The New York Badass” Phil Baroni, for the vacant Strikeforce world middleweight (185 lb. limit) championship during the main event of “Shamrock vs Baroni,” a live, Pay Per View televised Strikeforce-EliteXC cage fight card that will take place at San Jose, California’s HP Pavilion on Friday, June 22nd.

Han ska dessutom ha betalat hans borgen när han åkte i trubble med lagen i Florida och har sagt att han kommer adoptera Baroni om han tok-knockar Shamrock.

Murilo “Ninja” Rua will not be facing Joey Villasenor as part of the “Shamrock vs. Baroni” event next week. He did not pass his physical as required for licensing by the State of California.

Rua and Villasenor were scheduled to fight for the vacant EliteXC middleweight title as part of the June 22nd Strikeforce-EliteXC co-promoted event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

In comments to MMAWeekly, Joey Villasenor said that he had just found out about the fight late Friday afternoon. “I don’t know what the hell is going on. I know my managers are doing their best to find me a fight.

“With everything going on, I would love to be [EliteXC’s] first champion, but right now, I just want to fight. I haven’t trained this hard ever before in my life,” he said.

Villasenor’s obvious frustrations stem from weeks of preparing for the five-round title fight, only to have it yanked out from under him. Now, his managers and the promoters are left to scramble just to find him an opponent.

“I have been training hard, preparing for five rounds, for weeks,” commented Villasenor with irritation in his voice. “I just want to fight. I need something to let all of this out.”

“This is a tough break for ‘Ninja,’ Joey Villasenor and all MMA fight fans,” said Gary Shaw, President of Live Events at EliteXC. “This was going to be a terrific fight. We expect to announce a suitable opponent for Joey very soon.”

At press time, an opponent had not yet been determined. There has been some speculation as to Falaniko Vitale being a possibility, but no official word from EliteXC was forthcoming.

Synd att det blev såhär. Alltid tråkigt när fighter ändras nära inpå en gala, speciellt då detta var en titel fight och en av dom större fighterna på enna galan. Bara att hoppas dom kan lyckas hitta en hyfsad ersättare för "Ninja".

As was initially speculated when it was Murilo "Ninja" Rua would not be allowed to face Joey Villasenor on the June 22nd Strikeforce card in San Jose, Calif., longtime veteran Falaniko Vitale has stepped in to take his place.

Rua did not pass the required physical as is required in the State of California. He was to fight Villasenor for the vacant EliteXC middleweight title as part of the co-promoted event headlined by Frank Shamrock vs. Phil Baroni.

Villasenor was obviously disappointed when he found out the title bout was not going to happen, but at least he still has a fight. He told MMAWeekly yesterday, “With everything going on, I would love to be [EliteXC’s] first champion, but right now, I just want to fight. I haven’t trained this hard ever before in my life."

His replacement doesn't make the fight a whole lot easier though. Vitale's 22-7 professional record includes wins over Masanori Suda, Yushin Okami, Matt Lindland, and former UFC Middleweight Champion Dave Menne.

Though EliteXC signed Falaniko Vitale (Pictures) on short notice to fight Joey Villasenor (Pictures), it appears the Hawaiian will have flown to San Jose, Calif. just to watch some mixed martial arts action.

Both California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer Armando Garcia and Vitale's agent, Ken Pavia, told Sherdog.com Tuesday evening that medical questions surrounding Murilo Rua (Pictures) were likely resolved, and that if things progressed down their current track "Ninja" would face Villasenor on the co-promoted Strikeforce/EliteXC card on June 22.

EliteXC announced on June 15 that the Brazilian veteran was off the card after failing a CSAC physical exam. However, "Ninja" was never denied a license and comparisons between this situation and that of Hong-Man Choi, who was pulled off the Los Angeles FEG USA-promoted card on June 2 due to the discovery of a benign tumor on his pituitary gland, were unfair, said Garcia.

Pavia indicated that Vitale would be compensated for his time and trouble and EliteXC agreed to sign the veteran middleweight to a long-term deal.

Regarding a report that surfaced Tuesday on graciefighter.com about the status of Phil Baroni (Pictures), who is scheduled to fight Frank Shamrock (Pictures) on the card's main event, Garcia said the middleweight underwent standard MRI tests required of all licensees.

Pavia, who also represents Baroni, said results should be known sometime Wednesday morning and that he believed his client would be cleared to fight.

The 27-year-old lightweight from Ocala, Fla. with a long history of legal troubles is meeting with prosecutors on Tuesday, said EliteXC vice president Jared Shaw, as the mixed martial arts promotional company hopes to free Bennett (17-13-2) in time to fight Victor Valenzuela (Pictures) on pay-per-view from San Jose, Calif.

Bennett and Valenzuela (5-1-2) fought to a draw in August 2005.

If "Krazy Horse" is unable to fight, EliteXC has tabbed another Floridian, James Edson Berto (Pictures), to take Bennett's place. Berto (10-3-1) won his previous EliteXC contest, a stoppage over John Shackelford (Pictures) in February.

The Fight Network reported on Tuesday that Bennett has been booked in Marion County Jail 22 times since Dec. 1997 on charges ranging from traffic violations, drug possession, kidnapping and false imprisonment. Bennett has been arrested three times in the last 12 months.

Svårt att säga egentligen. Har inte störst koll på någon av dem. Ninja känns lite ojämn ibland men jag tror han tar hem det.

Jag tror stenhårt på Villasenor men jag hoppas vi får se en Ninja i kanonform...

Frank kommer mjuka upp phil med några lowkicks, för att sedans försöka få till ett takedown, som går åt helvete, lyckas scrambla guard men phil blir för ivrig och fastnar i ett armbar

Tuff match, 50/50 tror dock Tony får slita för att få ett takedown om han orkar subba cung lee, han verkar ha sjuk cardio
