The UFC 98 Welterweight grudge match between former champions Matt Hughes and Matt Serra is now just a few weeks away and the dislike between both fighters is also still there, but Hughes is not thinking about calling it quits either in fact Hughes wants a shot at the UFC 100 winner between Georges St-Pierre and Thiago Alves should he get past Serra and also wants to avenge the losses as well as competing for the Welterweight title once again.
In a recent interview with MMAFanhouse.com a confident Hughes says he will get past Serra, he would like to rematch the winner of the UFC 100 Welterweight title bout because he didn’t like the outcome of his last fight with each fighter.
“Well, if I beat Serra — and I obviously think I will — and Thiago wins I’d love to get a rematch with Thiago. I think that fight could have gone differently if my knee hadn’t gone out, so I’d love to rematch Thiago.”
“To be honest, I didn’t like the way the last GSP fight went either, so I’d love to rematch GSP. But all I’m worrying about right now is Matt Serra. So where ever winning that fight puts me is fine, but I’ve just got Matt Serra on my mind right now.”
And when asked as to who would have the advantages in the UFC 100 bout, Hughes replied that St-Pierre had most of them.
“I think GSP has the advantage. I think the striking will be pretty competitive, maybe Thiago will have an edge there, I don’t know. The wrestling I think goes to GSP. I think he’ll be able to take Thiago down, and I think the ground work will go to GSP as well. I think it could be a close fight or it could be someone getting knocked out in the first round. The fight could go either way. Sometimes two guys like that could have a great fight or sometimes it could be a stalemate. Let’s hope it’s not like that and let’s hope both guys try to finish, and it’s an exciting fight.”
But I am not so sure the UFC would want to put St-Pierre in a fourth fight with Hughes just like I am pretty sure they wouldn’t want to put St-Pierre in there against BJ Penn, so the best thing would be for Hughes to just keep his focus on Matt Serra which I am certain that he is doing because Serra will be focused on him and only him as well.
