- This deal had been talked about months ago. There was several meetings between the UFC and Affliction including one that Couture tried to put together. One of the deals, around the time of the Arlovski vs Barnett fight that fell through, was that Affliction would cease to promote in exchange for being allowed to sponsor UFC fighters and get Affliction shirts on their shows.
- They had several meetings that didn't go well, including one before UFC 100 that ended really badly. The UFC knew that the Barnett vs Fedor show was going to be Affliction's final show so they didn't bother trying to counter program it with free tv.
- Right after UFC 100 there was another meeting where Affliction would cancel the show because the advance ticket sales were low and they knew they were going to lose their ass on ppv. They wanted to save face by letting Dana have Barnett vs Fedor on a UFC show and let them have some of the other fights on the Affliction card at future UFC ppvs and say that they had merged.
- The main problems where that the UFC weren't going to take Fedor under those circumstances. Why put him on a UFC show when he has only one fight left on his contract, plus his contract was crazy by UFC standards, he gets distribution rights and other rights that the UFC simply weren't going to accept.
The other reason the deal fell apart was Tom Atencio demanding that Dana publically apologize to him.
- Affliction then opened talks with Strikeforce. Strikeforce didn't go for the deal as they didn't want to pick up those huge contracts.
- The Barnett steroid failure was a god send because it gave them a face saving excuse to call off the show that they had been looking to get out of previously.
- Dana assumed the Strikeforce/Affliction deal was done but around Friday morning Affliction called him up and struck a deal.
- Dave believes it is legally somewhat similar to WWF purchasing WCW in that they can pick and choose which contracts they want to pick up.
They won't take Fedor right now but if they can get him down to a new contract they'll take him. Doesn't imagine they'll pick up Arlovski,Sylvia and Linland's contracts. Vitor Belfort they'll probably take as they've been talking about bringing him back for a while.
- Affliction contracts are non exclusive. Dana won't put a guy on his show who isn't exclusive to the UFC. In theory they can work for Japan or Strikeforce with the way the contracts are structured.
